Preparation Guide

Slide through the following step-by-step guideline, and brew the perfect cup of tea at home.

Leaves

Measure With Care

For the perfect brew, use 3g (1 Tbsp) of Marubi.

This amount allows you to enjoy the tea’s evolving flavors through up to 3 infusions, each offering new notes with every pour.

Temperature

High Heat

Consistent temperature per infusion:

100°C (212°F) → 100°C (212°F) → 100°C (212°F)

Even with the same brewing temperature, each step draws out new layers of flavor, from delicate umami to rich depth.

Water

The Right Balance

Use 150ml (5oz) of water for each infusion.

Consistency ensures every steep reveals the tea’s full character, from the first pour to the last.

Brewing

Timing Each Infusion

Steep with care:

40s → 60s → 120s

Each step reveals a new layer of flavor, balancing freshness, depth, and lingering sweetness.

Tips

Perfect Your Infusion

For a lighter taste, reduce brewing by 10 seconds; for a stronger flavor, extend by 10 seconds

First, pour into a Yuzamashi (cooling vessel) to harmonize flavor and aroma before serving.

Always pour until the very last drop, where the richest flavor concentrates.

    Very tasteful Hojicha tea.

What I like so much about the Marubi is that the nutty taste and the roasted aroma are perfectly balanced. I also like the fact that the roasted aroma does not dominate the other flavors, as I have experienced with Hojicha from other manufacturers.

I have also found that Marubi is also very suitable as a cold brewed tea. For me, 5g of Marubi makes 2-3 liters of tea in the end, depending on how strong the taste should be.

Generally I prefer Sencha, but I was looking for a tea that goes well with roasted food - and Marubi is quite perfect with that. Its a bit in the direction of black tea or coffee, but much more subtle, with a strong aroma before drinking it.

I am glad that it was part of the discovery box, so I could experience this tea. I can even drink it in the afternoon because its lower on caffeine (I could never drink sencha after 12:00 without being wake the whole night...)

You should of course be used to green tea and keep to the preparation guidelines, using the right water to Marubi right.

I do not know much about tea. However, I do love a good, strong, cup of black tea and have been drinking tea since I was 6 years old - I am now 63. When I saw the video(s) about Mohei tea, I decided to try something new and expand my tea drinking experience.

The tea that I selected - Marubi - was about 10 times more expensive than the tea that I would normally drink, although I was happy to buy it for the sake of experiencing something new.

When it arrived, I made a cup. My experience was not good. I did not enjoy the flavour. I could not determine any of the flavour characteristics that were attributed to this tea on the website and on the packaging.

To me, it tasted like a mildly bitter cup of hot water. I could not discern "a smooth and mellow taste with a hint of sweetness". I did not experience "a toasty and nutty flavor".

I decided that I had made a mistake in trying to expand my tea drinking experience and felt somewhat disappointed.

I have not tried it since, and the packet of Marubi tea sits in my cupboard as a sad reminder of the time that I decided to try 'that tea from Japan' as I call it now.

I apologise if this review is not favourable. It is honest.
