Tea Pairing

Best moment of the day: For Dinner

Japanese tea is traditionally offered with Japanese sweets.
They also pair very well with all sorts of meals, either for breakfast, lunch, breaks, or even dinner (for the lower-caffeine tea).

During his years of serving tea to his dear customers, Mohei's knowledge of the flavors and characteristics of his teas allows him to share the wonders of an exceptional green tea served with the right food. When paired well, Japanese tea can unlock further benefits such as better digestion, better diet, or enhanced sensation of satiety.

A warm and cozy pairing

A hot hojicha that will match your roasted meal perfectly

Very tasteful Hojicha tea.

What I like so much about the Marubi is that the nutty taste and the roasted aroma are perfectly balanced. I also like the fact that the roasted aroma does not dominate the other flavors, as I have experienced with Hojicha from other manufacturers.

I have also found that Marubi is also very suitable as a cold brewed tea. For me, 5g of Marubi makes 2-3 liters of tea in the end, depending on how strong the taste should be.

Dear Philip,

Thank you so much for your review and for describing your experience with Marubi with such details. Marubi is a very unique tea that only Mohei can produce. Everything you pinpointed was the aim of our tea master, and we all very much delighted to see that our Hojicha succeeded in its missions.

Generally I prefer Sencha, but I was looking for a tea that goes well with roasted food - and Marubi is quite perfect with that. Its a bit in the direction of black tea or coffee, but much more subtle, with a strong aroma before drinking it.
I am glad that it was part of the discovery box, so I could experience this tea. I can even drink it in the afternoon because its lower on caffeine (I could never drink sencha after 12:00 without being wake the whole night...)
You should of course be used to green tea and keep to the preparation guidelines, using the right water to Marubi right.

Dear Strecker,

Thank you this kind review about Marubi. This tea in particular is very unique and is considered a 'Hojicha' only because Mohei needed it to be categorized. The production of Marubi is quite complicated and takes more efforts compared to the other teas in our selection, so your understanding of its intricacies and taste is greatly appreciated!

I do not know much about tea. However, I do love a good, strong, cup of black tea and have been drinking tea since I was 6 years old - I am now 63. When I saw the video(s) about Mohei tea, I decided to try something new and expand my tea drinking experience.

The tea that I selected - Marubi - was about 10 times more expensive than the tea that I would normally drink, although I was happy to buy it for the sake of experiencing something new.

When it arrived, I made a cup. My experience was not good. I did not enjoy the flavour. I could not determine any of the flavour characteristics that were attributed to this tea on the website and on the packaging.

To me, it tasted like a mildly bitter cup of hot water. I could not discern "a smooth and mellow taste with a hint of sweetness". I did not experience "a toasty and nutty flavor".

I decided that I had made a mistake in trying to expand my tea drinking experience and felt somewhat disappointed.

I have not tried it since, and the packet of Marubi tea sits in my cupboard as a sad reminder of the time that I decided to try 'that tea from Japan' as I call it now.

I apologise if this review is not favourable. It is honest.

Dear Christeky,

First and foremost, thank you for your honest review about your experience with Marubi. We highly value any feedback and most importantly, care about our customers' satisfaction. We are sorry to hear that your expectations were not met after trying Marubi for the first time and for the partial inaccuracy you have felt in our product's description.

Compared to other Hojichas, Marubi does have a hint of sweetness and possesses a nutty flavor due to its leaves being roasted for 2 hours at 120º during the production process (instead of 20min at 180º for standard Hojicha). These two flavor traits of Marubi have often been highly highlighted by other customers and tea professionals, earning it an award.

Nevertheless, we understand that each individual may experience tea differently. Sometimes, it is a matter of how it is prepared (the temperature, the quantity, or leaves left too long in hot water will loose their subtle flavors), other times it is a matter of taste. We hope that you will give it another chance, but most importantly, that you will try other Green Teas (not necessarily from us) such as the Sencha, which has a great variety of intricate flavors. We believe that as a tea-lover, you would find a lot of enjoyment in trying other Japanese teas.

Once again, we thank you for your honest comment and will always work hard on offering the best services and tea possible.

Enhance your tea experience
