Preparation Guidelines

Although we always recommend using traditional tea tools for the most authentic experience, Kokuyo can be easily prepared with everyday utensils.

Just follow the simple steps below to enjoy a perfect cup of this fragrant, Hojicha Powder every time.

Step Nº1

Sift Hojicha Powder

Use 2 grams of Kokuyo Hojicha Powder for a standard cup.

Use a spoon or the chashaku to scoop the appropriate amount into a fine mesh strainer placed over your cup or mixing bowl.

Sift the powder through the strainer to remove any clumps, ensuring a smooth, lump-free texture perfect for lattes or hot water preparation.

Step Nº2

Add Hot Water

💧 150 mL (5 oz) 🌡️ 100°C (212°F) ⏱️ 40 sec

Boil fresh water and use it at 100°C for optimal extraction of the rich, roasty flavors.
Pour 150 mL of hot water over the sifted Kokuyo Hojicha Powder and whisk or stir well.
Let steep or rest briefly (about 40 seconds) to allow the deep aroma and flavor to fully develop.

Step Nº3

Whisk the Hojicha

Hold your bowl (or cup) with one hand and use a chasen (bamboo whisk) or small kitchen whisk with the other.

Whisk the Kokuyo Hojicha Powder briskly in a zigzag or "M" motion until the powder is fully dissolved and a light foam appears on the surface.

This should take about 15–30 seconds.
For a smoother or creamier version (like a hojicha latte), whisk more gently to create a silky, even texture without large bubbles.

Step Nº4

Rest the Chasen

After whisking, clean the Chasen with water and then place it on the Chasen Holder to maintain its shape and prolong its life.

Be careful not to place the whisk on the holder without cleaning it first.

Tea Pairing

Best moment of the day: Morning Calm – Cozy Afternoons – After-Dinner Relaxation.

Kokuyo, our special high-roast hojicha powder, is a versatile tea that pairs wonderfully with homemade treats. Its deep, toasty flavor complements the gentle sweetness of fruit-based desserts, cookies, and cakes.

We especially recommend using Kokuyo to create hojicha-flavored sweets—infuse the powder directly into batters or steep the leaves to make a rich roasted green tea extract. You can also add coarsely ground leaves to enhance texture and aroma, creating refined hojicha desserts with a comforting, roasty depth.

Whether paired with a warm pastry or used as an ingredient in your next baking adventure, Kokuyo offers a unique, soul-warming twist to teatime.

Perfect with Fruit-Based Desserts

Use it to complement a fruit tart, sponge cake, or even simple baked apples for a comforting and well-balanced dessert moment.
